Simmerling made history at Rio 2016 by becoming the first Canadian athlete to compete in a different sport at each of three different Olympic Games. After competing in just four team track cycling team pursuit races, she helped Canada win its second straight Olympic bronze medal in the event for her first Olympic podium finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Simmerling a marqué l'histoire à Rio 2016 en devenant le premier athlète canadien à concourir dans un sport différent à chacun des trois Jeux olympiques différents. Après avoir participé à seulement quatre courses de poursuite par équipe en cyclisme sur piste, elle a aidé le Canada à remporter sa deuxième médaille de bronze olympique d'affilée dans cette épreuve et à monter pour la première fois sur le podium olympique aux Jeux de Tokyo en 2020.
